NEW PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES FOR LIMB PROSTHESES: FROM CAD-CAM TO 3D PRINTING

In the last three years, the media have spoken very often about the 3D for the realization of prosthesis and socket designs, often presenting this technology as easy to use, fast and extremely economical, contrasting it to the alleged disproportionate costs of traditional implants. With this talk we want to shed light on some of these aspects, focusing, for example, on prosthesis for amputatations below the knee (transtibial). We will begin by presenting the current CAD-CAM technology in use at the Prosthesis Center, which uses a 7-axis robot. Then, we will review the 3D printing process, showing some examples of applications that are being developed at the Prosthesis Center. Finally, we will discuss some of the challenges, cultural and technical, that await CPOs and bioengineering in this area.
